House sitting

Who would have thought that luxury meant standing under a hot shower with the water continuously running, or switching on an electric kettle or iron and not having to think about power usage!  Well, that is what happens when you move from your van to a house.

So what have we been doing?  Well, we have been to a couple of quizzes, the first a fundraiser for Maheno Netball Teams held at the local pub.  Our team of Roy, Bernice, Mike and James did really well (we came 4th) considering we had no idea on the (very) local questions and did not fare too well on the farming section either.  Not bad really, and a great night out too. Then it was the usual quiz at Fat Sally’s pub on Wednesdays.

Before Helen & Don went away we spent an afternoon tracking some Geocahes in the area within 10km of their house.  We even managed to take Helen & Don along a road they had never been along!  And we found all 6 caches.   A fun way to spend a dull Sunday afternoon.

Whilst the rest of the South Island was covered in deep snow, we were sitting here in relative warmth and sunshine, even making ourselves a pinhole camera to view the transit of Venus!  The weather has been rather kind to us, with mostly lovely clear winter days.  Plus it helps that we are in a nice warm house with double glazing and a log fire.

In between Bernice has been spring cleaning the van, including sorting out linen cupboards and our wardrobes, and having a good reorganise.  In between she has been knitting for the grandchildren and cooking up a storm.  Roy has been very busy with his work and is making headway with rewriting a computer program.  The RAV has had its Warrant of Fitness and a few things tweaked, all in all, a spring clean done a few months early.

OK. We have been slack, the above was written over two weeks ago, since then we have moved from Helen & Don’s back into Pen-y-bryn.  We have settled in to some semblance of non-routine as it seems that everyday brings another thing to see, do, achieve.

We had our first lot of guests over the last weekend and are we ever out of practise!!  We managed to exhaust ourselves after they left with all the usual follow up returning everything to its normal state.  Oh how soon we forget.

This last week, we welcomed to the family Maggie Ann Coatham born in Dunedin on Sunday 17th June to Stuart & Emma,  sister to Toby, and Maggie just happened to be born on her cousin Renee’s 4th birthday. A much welcome granddaughter for Mike whom we know will bring him much joy and happiness.

We shall attempt to be a little bit better in the upkeep of the blog, although we are not promising anything!
